Broken and Mending Ministries Uganda (BAMM) exists to promote small business skills within the Ugandan culture, to provide churches where God's Word is taught, and to bring the Kingdom to children in villages around Fort Portal.

WHAT WE DO

Thank you for taking the time to come and find out about the ministry in Fort Portal, Uganda.

We have been in Fort Portal since August of 2013 and opened the bakery in February of 2014.

NEW LIFE CHURCH

This church is currently pastored by Pastor Laurie Dickerson. New Life meets on Sundays at Sweet Aromas Bakery (when the bakery is closed). There are also 2 Bible Studies each week, one at the bakery on Wednesdays and one in Butebe on Fridays. Butebe is a small community about 2 miles out of town. At both Bible Studies, the goal is for Ugandans to read and understand their Bibles.

We have put a young man, Nicholas, in Bible School so he can take over the pastoral duties of New Life Church when he finishes at the college (in 2 years).

Sweet Aromas is located in Fort Portal, Uganda, a town in the southwestern part of the country. The bakery is a place for locals and visitors to Fort Portal to come and get great pastries, cookies, coffees, and teas; to visit with friends and/or get on the internet, and to study in a quiet place.

It also is a place where Ugandans are trained to bake, to learn and practice good hygienic cleaning habits and to run a small business. (We currently have 7 staff working either full or part-time.)

The manager, Gerald, has been with Sweet Aromas since its beginning in 2014. He now does most of the training and mentoring of the staff under Laurie's direction.

CHILDREN'S OUTREACH

The outreaches focus on children in the villages around Fort Portal. These happen at least once a month and consist of a fun time for kids together to do arts/crafts, to play organized games, to sing fun kids' songs and to have a Bible story to help them come to know Jesus as their Savior. We also go once a month to YAWE (Youth and Women Empowered), an organization for young people living with HIV/AIDS. We offer a similar schedule of games, arts and crafts, songs and Bible stories to these young people. We also participate in their yearly game days, as well as their yearly conference held for young people from surrounding villages who are dealing with HIV/AIDS in their lives.

The bakery is about 80% self-supporting, with only a small amount (about $600) needed monthly to help with rent. The bakery also helps with the children's outreaches and the church. (The church meets in the bakery building on Sundays when the bakery is closed.)

When you send support to Broken and Mending for the Uganda work, it goes to:

  • Rental cost for the building in which we have the bakery and the church

  • Support for Laurie Dickerson, the missionary who began and maintains the 3 parts of BAMM in Fort Portal.
